De Bijland is located in the natural area where three major rivers fork: the Rhine, the Waal, and the IJssel. Due to the open connection to the Rhine, De Bijland is easily accessible (kilometer marker 864). This location makes De Bijland particularly suitable as a starting point or stopover for excursions on Dutch waterways. But this area is also very suitable for other forms of recreation. De Gelderse Poort, for example, is an ideal area for hiking and cycling. There are several signposted hiking, cycling, and skating routes there. You can also start one of the numerous cycling routes from De Bijland.

In 1313, St. Martin's Church was first documented as an independent parish church in Niederelten. In 1450, a new building in the late Gothic style replaced the original Romanesque church, which still characterizes Elten's townscape today. In 1865, the sacristy was added to the church, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the tower was adorned with a quarry stone gallery with corner pinnacles and an octagonal slate pyramid.
