8月 4, 2025, Builg Burn Trail to the Loch
After the smooth gravel on the north side of Glen Avon, you'll encounter more rugged and adventurous trails here. However, as in the rest of the Scottish Highlands, the higher up the climb, the more beautiful the scenery becomes. With a gravel bike or mountain bike, you can enjoy beautiful cycling all the way to Loch Builg, or beyond.

4月 9, 2025, Loch Shandra
This man-made loch, created by damming the burn flowing down the glen, is a peaceful spot renowned for its excellent fly fishing opportunities, where anglers can catch wild brown and rainbow trout. The loch's name is believed to stem from the Scottish Gaelic term "Seantruibh," meaning "Old farmtoun" or "settlement," reflecting the area's deep historical roots. This connection to the Gaelic past adds cultural significance to the loch, enhancing its charm alongside its natural beauty and recreational appeal.

4月 9, 2025, Auchintaple Loch
Auchintaple Loch, a popular spot for walkers on the Cateran Trail, features a boat house on its far side. Although man-made, the area is rich in history, with nearby remnants of an early chapel at Chapel Hillock. The site, marked by a turf-covered stone bank enclosing a hollow, contains several stones. Close by is the Lady Well, or Virgin Mary's Well, which still flows with clear water. Historically, this well, along with others in the region, was believed to have curative properties, attracting people seeking healing. The first Sabbath in May was thought to be the time when the waters were most powerful, and drinking from the well before sunrise was considered particularly beneficial.

The visitor centre is open daily 10am - 4pm. The impressive dune system is always open. 😉

Some small remote hill lochs and reportedly the spot where an old alder survives in this almost treeless part of the landscape.

I thought I saw on the map that this was a good place to pitch my tent between the lakes, but that is not the case!

Lochnagar is an impressive hill. If going to the White Mounth beyond do not underestimate the walk back out.

It's largely part of a nature reserve, and a good place for wildlife spotting. Various geese, ducks, red kites and other birds in particular. But also lots of butterflies. Note that water sports are not allowed March to September to protect the birds.

Such a fantastic walk up there, especially with the sun out! Excellent trail that makes it an easy one to do in any weather. Although I would not see why you would go up there if everything is in the clag.

The narrow dirt path around the loch's southern edge is very scenic. In parts the path passes along the top of the dam wall - this is a man-made loch. A few gates to pass through. Pause at the boat house for photos and refreshments.

1月 19, 2024, Forvie National Nature Reserve Visitor Centre
Forvie National Nature Reserve is a treasure located north of Newburgh in Aberdeenshire, in the northeast of Scotland. Owned and managed by NatureScot, the reserve is one of Scotland’s most dramatic stretches of coast3. It covers almost 1,000 hectares of sand dunes and dune heath between the North Sea and the estuary of the River Ythan1. The Sands of Forvie, which are the fifth largest sand dune system in Britain, dominate the southern end of the reserve. These sands are the least disturbed by human activity in the country.

Stunning 7.75 mile hike round Loch Muick on Monday. One side is a great track with stunning views of the loch and mountains, the colours of the flowering Heather was fabulous. Nice cuppa at lochside opposite the lodge. Track then takes you through lovely woods. Bottom of Loch track takes you over stepping stones to other side which was a harder walk because of stones and uneven ground. Walking poles recommended for this side. Great views across the Loch to the lodge and part views of lochnagar. Silly me stopped for a cuppa at rangers hut and got eaten alive by midgies! It took us 4 hours 10 minutes including a 15 minute lunch break.

A cool spot for a nice picture at the shore of Loch Muick. If the weather is bad, you might also pitch your tent inside the open boat house.

A good way-marked path mostly gravel can be taken around the loch, and takes 1 - 2 hours depending on fitness. Easily accessible parking either in Dinnet or the Muir of Dinnet NNR visitor centre car park.

2月 9, 2023, Clas Fhearnaig Pass
The Clas Fhearnaig Pass links Glen Quoich in the east with Glen Lui in the west. The high point on the pass is at about 500m which isn't a large climb from either side. The two long lochs in the pass make a nice feature and a good resting place. Most people walk through here on a circuit of the two glens from the south but you can also access the ridge and head south to Creag Bhalg, it's rough country though.

2月 7, 2023, Forvie National Nature Reserve Visitor Centre
Forvie Nature Reserve is a large area of sand dune, beach and mud flats on the river Ythan and the North Sea. It's an important area for sea birds and seals, both of which you can see all year. The visitor centre has lots of information about this habitat and the wildlife you are likely to see. There are also toilets here.

2月 5, 2023, Pools of Dee
The Pools of Dee are just above the source of the River Dee on the Lairig Ghru trail that cuts across the Cairngorms. It's a beautiful and wild spot that would make a great swim if you're lucky with the weather.

2月 4, 2023, Loch Brandy
Loch Brandy is a lovely mountain corrie surrounded by steep craggy slopes. The path up from Clova is well maintained and not too far but quite steep. There is a circuit of the loch or options to walk further over Green Hill and across to Loch Wharral and back into Glen Clova.
