All the cafés and inns are good - though special mention to Bridge House (opposite car park near church) for "proper good food", a really nice welcome, and being able to store bikes inside (just ask) - hot choc is amazing!

Sometimes it's the smallest things that restore one's faith in humanity. Cyclist's Rest is a small picnic area in a private field that is complete with bench and table and furnished with some of the finest views in Devon. All accessed via a hole in a beach hedge – blink and you'll miss it!

This old wool town lies just south of Exmoor National Park and is a lovely place to stop for a bite to eat. Dating back 1,000 years at least, Bampton retains a distinct air of community and serenity. The town is a conservation area and has more listed buildings than you can shake a stick at. Hike up to the motte and bailey castle for lovely views over the town.

Featuring the Tivvy Bumper, a GWR steam engine, this museum is a popular day trip. Mid Devon is largely rural but has a complex and impressive history in industries from mining to lace making. You'll learn about historical agriculture practices and see for yourself how the county's little communities sustained themselves despite their remote locations.

With a network of paths, this diverse woodland is a lovely place to explore. Keep a look-out for wildlife, wildflowers, and interesting fungi. Visit throughout the year; it's different in every season.

This remote church has a peaceful atmosphere and is steeped in history. Whilst parts of the church date to the 15th century, much of it was restored and rebuilt in 1867. Inside the church, there are two 17th century monuments to the Chichester family and a large 18th century monument to William Fellowes in Italian marble.
