Giovanni Gentile (Castelvetrano, May 30, 1875 - Florence, April 15, 1944) was an Italian philosopher. Together with Benedetto Croce he was one of the greatest exponents of idealism, and an important protagonist of Italian culture in the first half of the 20th century. Gentile was born in 1875 to Giovanni, a pharmacist, and Teresa Curti, daughter of a notary. He lived his childhood in Campobello di Mazara and attended the Ximenes high school in Trapani. In 1895 he won the competition for four internal positions at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, where he enrolled in the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. He has as teachers, among others, Alessandro D'Ancona (professor of literature, linked to the historical method and positivism and liberal ideas), Amedeo Crivellucci (professor of history) and Donato Jaia (professor of philosophy, Hegelian follower of Spaventa), who greatly influenced his philosophical thought as an adult.
