Rook with a Book – A Scenic Stop Right by the Fowey Ferry If you’re bikepacking through South Cornwall and looking to cross the River Fowey, this spot combines function with a bit of culture. Just meters from the Polruan passenger ferry landing, you’ll find “Rook with a Book” — a striking metal sculpture created by Thrussells, celebrating local author Daphne du Maurier. While the sculpture might resemble an eagle at first glance, it’s actually a rook — a clever symbol of intelligence and storytelling, fitting for the town where du Maurier wrote some of her most famous works, including The Birds. The sculpture, named Isla, overlooks the estuary and makes a great place to pause before or after your ferry ride. 🧭 Bikepacker Tips: • The Polruan Ferry is just a few steps away and usually allows bikes, though space can be limited at busy times or during high tide. • Need a sturdier crossing? The Bodinnick vehicle ferry is just upriver and better for loaded rigs. • Fowey offers a solid resupply opportunity — with cafés, food shops, and great views. • The sculpture makes a great landmark and rest stop with benches nearby and panoramic views across the estuary. 📸 Look out for buzzards or kestrels overhead — while there are no eagles here, the wild birds and sweeping views add to the atmosphere of this uniquely Cornish crossing point. 📍Fowey waterfront – sculpture and ferry landing are just meters apart

This is a nice tranquil location. It is a relaxed place where people are walking about, sitting drinking and eating at cafes and outside of restaurants and bars. The are different statues and features, it os decorated quite well. The big bird is one example

Whole ride great. Except the Single track from Golant cross roads to the top of Penventinue. Unless it’s emtb you will struggle. Steep, muddy, overgrown and slippy. It’s a challenge! Counted 23 hills of 10 to 15% plus. It’s hilly, excellent short trainer. Not sure if it was fun🤔.

Only useable at low tide, unless you fancy an unplanned swim. They're tricky but manageable, and you will be the entertainment for anyone sitting in the garden of the adjacent Ship Inn. Check the tide tables

Regular crossing on the small ferry. Disappointingly for 2 bikes plus 2 people it's £6, and for 2 people in a car it's £6. My friend who used to live near here tells me that, until recently, it used to be free for bicycles.

Very nice manor house. Very well restored and equipped with details. A visit to the kitchen and family rooms is recommended.

Lanhydrock House is a Victorian mansion house with extensive gardens and woodland as part of the estate. Although some parts of it date from the early 17th century, the grade I listed building is largely more recent due to a fire which destroyed the original property in 1881. It is generally known as just 'Lanhydrock'. The house is now managed by the National Trust. Visitors can explore 54 of its rooms, plus the gardens and even cycling trails in the grounds. For further information visit their website https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lanhydrock

The Bodinnick Ferry takes pedestrians, bikes and cars across the Fowey Estuary. It is open for pedestrians every day except Christmas Day. The journey is only a few minutes long, but even in this short time you can take in wonderful views up and down river. For further information and ferry prices see their website https://www.ctomsandson.co.uk/bodinnick-ferry/

10月 31, 2022, Respryn Bridge
Dating back to the 15th century, Respryn Bridge is built from granite and is famous for being a strategic crossing point of the River Fowey during the English Civil War, when neighbouring Lanhydrock and Boconnoc were opposing sides. Today it forms a much more peaceful river crossing on the edge of the Lanhydrock Estate, and is protected from heavier traffic by the addition of stone bollards at either end.

If you are looking for somewhere that conjures up the smuggling history of Cornwall, then this is it. The setting for Daphne du Maurier's novel, Jamaica Inn is an 18th century coaching inn which provided travellers respite from crossing the wilds of Bodmin Moor. As it was in the middle of nowhere, it was also the perfect location to hide goods being smuggled into the country from the Cornish coast. At Jamaica Inn you will still find a place to rest a while, enjoy some food and drink or even stay the night. Plus a collection of smuggling artefacts to really give you an insight into its history.

7月 14, 2022, Treverbyn Mill and Ancient Bridge
Treverbyn Ancient Bridge is a medieval crossing over the River Fowey. It is now used as a footbridge and on its western end contains parts of a much older crossing which had fallen into disrepair in 1412 or 1413 when this bridge was comissioned. Treverbyn Mill, on the west side of the bridge, is a grade II listed watermill, once used to grind corn.

7月 12, 2022, Roche Rock Chapel Ruins
Roche Rock is a granite outcrop looming 20m high. On top of the rock is the ruin of a chapel built in 1409. There are plenty of legends surrounding the chapel. It is thought to have been lived in by a hermit and his daughter, hence another popular name for it being Roche Rock Hermitage. In medieval times it is said to have been occupied by a landowning family who had leprosy and wanted to protect loved ones from catching it. The demon of Jan Tregeagle, an evil Cornish magistrate who was said to have made a pact with the devil in return for power, fame and success, tried to hide at Roche Rock after being set a series of impossible tasks to keep him out of hell until Judgement Day. When the wind is blowing you might even hear wailing coming from the chapel walls.
