Part of the Leek Branch of the Caldon Canal the pool allows boats to turn around before the tunnel. The Churnet Way long distance walking trail and NCN 559 follow the canal towpath past the pool.

Well maintained and very smooth path. Must be great to ride in winter

Definitely recommend walking this short section in both directions, up and down

Steep ascent going up to circa 20 deg but highly recommended to keep your fitness up 😁

It's easily passable on a bike with grippy tyres

Quiet little gem of Staffordshire walking Can be ridden on gravel/mtb. It’s an alternative to Couldon canal

Nice stretch of gravel from Leek canal tunnel to the gate by the Woodside Lane

Very attractive route leading through the red trail. Bit boggy this time of year (November) with few hike-a-bike sections. Fully recommend this one.

The whole ride along the lively canal is worth it.

The main canal path is really well surfaced however this section over the tunnel has a number of steep steps and pointless gates and obstacles, while there is a path to avoid the steps all of the gates are locked so you’ll still have to struggle with the bike

Riding through here during bluebells season is an absolute joy - several kilometres of the path are blanketed with bluebells on both sides. Simply glorious.

Needs some serious upgrading to make this properly accessible to most riders

Good spot

Great place to have a wander or ride your bike and learn about the areas industrial past. The views would have been very different not so long ago and certainly not as nice as the ones today.

Interesting Colliery Buildings and slag heaps to remind us what countryside was for many of us in the northern industrial areas 😁 Colliery Visitor Heritage Centre. Connected to Route 55 of the National Cycle Network. Good circuits possible IP to Mow Cop, Biddulph Moor, down to Rudyard etc.
