Originally a motte and bailey Norman castle, only the earthwork mound and ramparts remain now. The castle is accessible by public footpaths from the nearby village of New Radnor and the castle still command a ranging view over the village and countryside. The castle's former use as a gaol ensured New Radnor's status as the former County Town before that status was moved to the larger Presteigne.

The poet A.E. Housman described Clun, Clunton and Clunbury as being the quietest places under the sun and it still is. Standing beneath the Norman castle, the township has attracted famous writers such as Chatwin, Forster and Osborne. Time to reflect on the walk as you are nearly there now, time for a well earned drink.

Idyllic lane climb up Stonewall Hill offering far-reaching views into England and Wales (one side of the road is England, the other Wales). A great descent that goes on for ages. Much tougher the other way, of course.

Hopton Castle refers to a village and a castle of the same name, hidden in the rolling Shropshire countryside between Craven Arms and Knighton. The castle itself has been a ruin since the 18th century, and is a wonderfully atmospheric place to wander around. Grade I listed, it's looked after by the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust, which has overseen recent restoration work and an appearance on Time Team in 2010.

A ruined castle in Clun, Clun Castle would once have protected the region, especially against Welsh attack. It was established in the 12th century by Robert de Say, a Norman lord. In the 14th century, the castle was used as a hunting lodge before falling into disrepair. The Duke of Norfolk owns the castle today. It is designated Scheduled Monument and managed by English Heritage.
