Garway hill is one of the real highlights of the Herefordshire Trail, a proper hill with very fine views in all directions, and ponies!

This 13th century Norman Castle is set in a beautiful riverside location. It's managed by the National Trust and has free parking and free entry. It's also a good starting point for exploring the area.

Great food and drink in one of the oldest inns in Wales. Great outdoor space. And a noose on the stairway for those that misbehave 😂

Great ancient pub 17th century or older. Nice to see the noose hanging in the old staircase. Great beer garden in the sun, very good food too😊

Although you can barely walk about 2.5m above the surrounding land on this 12-century-old dike, you still get a nice picture of the area. For those walking the Beacons Way, this is a nice run-up to the hills of Brecon Beacon National Park.

Interesting C13th castle. Beautiful setting by river. Well worth a visit. Free parking. I used it as a starting point.

The first stage of the Beacons Way falls into two segments (of 1km and approx. 5km respectively) along with Offa's Dyke Path, one of those other long-distance walks (285km) in the west of England. The name refers to King Offa who ruled Mercia in the 8th century. The causeway was supposed to mark the border between his Anglo-Saxon kingdom and the Welsh kingdom of Powys. It is often about eight meters wide and is elevated about 2.5 m above the lakes / wetlands. The path starts in the northern Bay of Liverpool and ends at the mouth of the Severn, to date the southernmost point of the border between Wales and England.

7月 8, 2023, The Skirrid Inn
Possibly one of the oldest Inns in the United Kingdom. The current building dates from the second half of the 17th century, but some claim that there may have been an inn before that, on the pilgrimage route to Llanthony Priory, but no evidence of this has been found. An equally unconfirmed story is that the first floor of the inn once served as a court. The wear in the beam above the stairs is said to have been caused by ropes from which convicts were hung. Legends speak of 180 hanged people in this inn. The current operators like to refer to that history in the interior. Whether it's true or not doesn't matter: it's a pleasant place with a fairly wide menu.

Really cool trail, nice to look to one side and see England, and to the other and see Wales. Interesting that England is mostly farmland, whilst Wales is nice and wild.

Note for dog walkers - there are sheep and horses present, so dogs need to be kept on lead.

Garway Hill is a 1,200-foot (366 m) summit in Herefordshire, England. It has a trig-pointed summit and is a UK listed Marilyn. The views from the top are fantastic, with Wales' Black Mountains in the west and the Wye Valley in the east.

7月 25, 2020, Offa's Dyke Path
Offa's Dyke (Welsh: Clawdd Offa) is a large linear earthwork that roughly follows the current border between England and Wales. The structure is named after Offa, the Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia from AD 757 until 796, who is traditionally believed to have ordered its construction. Although its precise original purpose is debated, it delineated the border between Anglian Mercia and the Welsh kingdom of Powys. The earthwork, which was up to 65 feet (20 m) wide (including its flanking ditch) and 8 feet (2.4 m) high, traversed low ground, hills and rivers. Today it is protected as a scheduled monument. Some of its route is followed by the Offa's Dyke Path; a 176-mile (283 km) long-distance footpath that runs between Liverpool Bay in the north and the Severn Estuary in the south. Although the Dyke has conventionally been dated to the Early Middle Ages of Anglo-Saxon England, research in recent decades – using techniques such as radioactive carbon dating – has challenged the conventional historiography and theories about the earthwork, and show that it was started in the early fifth century, during the sub-Roman period.
