The Teutonic Knights called them Sperden, and Mazurians Smarden or Śniardrewno. At the lake, there were Old Prussian settlements, the remains of which are located on the surrounding hills. At the top of Grodzisko in Okartowo, an iron armor was unearthed.

In the town of Łuknajno, near the attractive Mikołajki, there is an observation tower with a beautiful view of Lake Śniardwy. The tower is located on private property, so the entrance fee is approx. PLN 3. The largest Polish lake with side branches covers an area of approx. 124.75 km2, and can be travelled along a 95 km long bicycle route. The depth reaches over 23 m, and the average is only 5.9 m. There are 8 islands on the lake with a total area of 38 ha. The "Masurian Sea" is 660.2 million m3 of water.
