The Nottingham canal is a hidden gem in this area! Relatively quiet compared to other similar trails. Great to cycle along and forget all your worries.

Surface is gravel and at times quite rocky so only suitable for gravel or MTB.

Path up to the viaduct which can be cycled across - eventually also we should be able to cycle down the other side - but works are still in progress on the path and the Visitors Centre.

Just downstream of Elvaston Castle, the River Derwent flows over a wide, stepped weir with broad impressive cascades. The surrounding wetlands are rich in wildlife, with chances to spot kingfishers, ducks, and even leaping salmon when conditions are right.

A good place to start anything! Two entrances or exits so make sure you get the right one! If you are a Greggs fan there is one here at the front entrance.

Stunning medieval bridge crossing the River Trent. Built in the 13th century, it's a Grade I-listed structure and scheduled monument.

Rather impressive (probably more so when there's been some rain!) weir on the Derwent river - worth a stop 🚵‍♂️👍

The Nottingham Canal originally travelled a distance of 14 miles (22.5 km) from the Cromford Canal to the River Trent at Nottingham, but most of it is now in a variety of various states of use and preservation, with only a 2.5 miles (4 km) section through the centre of Nottingham still used by boats. The remainder of the canal towpath is used for a variety of recreational activities, including cycling.

if going clockwise from the Erewash/ Sandiacre to Derby canal when you get to breaston and the Navigation Pub stay on the cycle path there until it becomes impossible to carry on any farther then go on to the main road otherwise you will be going on and off the trail a couple of times.

In 2024, the surface has been upgraded to excellent quality, smooth tarmac for the whole route between Derby City centre and Borrowash bridge.
