When I went it said speedwell cavern was shut

Odin Mine is the oldest documented lead mine in Derbyshire, the first recorded mention dating back to 1280. It's likely to pre-date this back as far as Roman, Saxon and even Danish times. The original open-cast workings created a limestone gorge which is now the entrance area. Near the gorge is the Odin Cave, a naturally formed void.

Nice Area, be careful going down uneven footing can twist an ankle ( definitely not me )

Nice area just to have a look at and sit inside, there Is warnings of lose stone so be careful.

Speedwell Cavern is one of the four show caves in Castleton, Derbyshire, England. The cave system consists of a horizontal lead miners' adit 200m below ground leading to the cavern itself, a limestone cave.

One of the many great caverns to explore in the area. I would recommend visiting when it is too hot for a hike as the caverns stay relatively cool all year round. Or when it is raining as you are sheltered from the weather. PS there are a lot of steps.

The mine (more of a cave than a mine) has now been fenced off to one side so it is not possible to fully explore it. Although you can still get a view of it before approaching the broken road.

Take a look in this show cave (not National Trust) to see the rare mineral after which the cave is named.

A good little adventure! It's a guided boat tour. Our guide had some really good stories. It's rather cold in the cave, and there was water on the boat floor, so dress warmly and protect your feet.

One of the more well known caverns/caves in the area, admission fee, but there is a nice cafe when you have finished your tour.

Was looking forward to seeing this cavern as i had heard great things, unfortunately it was closed on the day, but reading rhe signage its still peaks my interest.. i will be back.

Nice walk from Castleton

Very pleasant spot to sit and have a picnic.

Odin Min is one of the oldest lead mines in England. Records confirm that it existed as far back as 1260. However, production peaked between 1720 and 1800. During this time 100 workers — men, women and children — excavated up to 800 tonnes of lead ore per year. The mine closed in 1847.

Seems to be closed off now, but it's a very old mine working, possibly back to Roman times.

This cavern is lesser known than the other local ones - but being so close to Castleton it’s well worth a visit. It’s a great one for kids but note the centre is pretty basic so there are no facilities at the caverns. There’s a public toilet near the bridge before you take the footpath to the cavern.
