Red Tarn a good place to take a break

Very doable from Helvellyn YHA without scary bits

The beautiful Tarn Hows offers an accessible circular walk (2.4km) through beautiful countryside with majestic mountain views. A great place to walk on a well maintained path. It can get busy though.

Take your time visiting Rydal Cave. It is a large cave on the north side of Loughrigg Fell, above Rydal Water. This cave is actually man-made, as a result of slate mining. Take the stepping stones through the shallow water at the entrance to the drier part of the cave. A torch is not really necessary.

Nice and easy walk around the reservoir. Great to stretch your legs. Plenty of options to make it harder or longer by climbing up the hills.

Fantastic views of Ennerdale and the surrounding mountains.

Great viewpoint and easy to access with the good path from the lake car park. The other hills are easily approached from here.

Gets very windy even on a clear day

Personally I prefer the views from here more than the summit of Helvelyn and most people skip this out so it’s usually quiet and peaceful

A head for heights required and choose a dry day if you’re not confident

Brilliant 360 degree views from the summit make this hill a good objective, but for a fuller mountain day the quieter but longer path over the Snarker Pike ridge is recommended rather then just a quick up and down from the Kirkstone pass

Dovestone Reservoir is situated where the Greenfield and Chew Brooks valleys come together above the village of Greenfield on Saddleworth Moor. The reservoir is located at the gateway to the iconic Peak District National Park and is a truly breathtaking location, oozing peace and serenity.

Red Screes is a tough, scree-covered climb up from Kirkstone Pass. The summit has a trig point at 2,546 feet (776 m) and excellent views in all directions. The run south from here past the tarn and back into Ambleside is brilliantly fast and flowing.

The National Trust car park for Tarn Hows is conveniently situated for plenty of running adventures in the area. Charges apply but NT members get free parking, and all proceeds are used to help maintain the trails, so it feels good to give a little back. The car park has toilets and, in the summer, and at other busy times the ice cream van serves a great pre or post run treat. For less able visitors off road tramper wheelchairs are available to borrow.

Good scramble across striding edge early spring with frost still on the summit, not as busy as the summer months
