The Franciscans (called "Barefoot Friars" because of their bare feet) settled in Erfurt as early as 1224 – it was one of their first establishments in the German-speaking world. Construction of the present church began after a city fire in 1291. The chancel was consecrated in 1316, while the nave was not completed until the early 15th century. The church is a three-aisled basilica with pillars. Typical of the mendicant order is the absence of a grand west tower; instead, it has a slender roof lantern (and a small tower on the north side).

Bürgel Monastery is a former Benedictine abbey in the Thalbürgel district of the town of Bürgel (Thuringia) in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia. The still preserved Romanesque church of St. Mary and St. George (often referred to as the Thalbürgel Monastery Church) is one of the most important sacred monuments in Thuringia and contains the remains of the only Benedictine choir in Germany.
