The Via Verda runs over the former railway line of the Zafán valley, which connected Aragón with the Mediterranean Sea and was in use for more than 30 years. The connection was closed in 1973, but the route has since been restored into a bicycle and walking path. The Terra Alta route runs through impressive nature reserves and mountain landscapes and famous places such as Horta de Sant Joan, where the painter Picasso stayed for several years. Along the route you will pass old train stations that have now been converted into restaurants or guesthouses to spend the night. Arriving in Tortosa you can view the monumental heritage of this historic city. Finally, you cycle through the Delta de l'Ebre natural park and the Ebro estuary. Large ponds, swamps and dry land alternate. In bird huts you can observe various waterfowl and with a bit of luck you will see a flamingo population. Tour of 40 km through 40 tunnels, most of them descending, so easy to ride, leaving from Cretas at the local bicycle rental (we had our own bicycles) and we will pick you up at the end of the route, this can be arranged via the campsite.

1月 14, 2024, La Magia Bakery
The small bakery helps to provide food in the sparsely populated area! Please note the typical long lunch break (it doesn't open again until 5 p.m.).

1月 14, 2024, View of the Hills and Mountains from the Road
Nice view of the surrounding landscape, good asphalt and (in our case) little traffic

On this section of the Via Verde you drive through many tunnels (as the path runs on the former railway line). Many of the longer tunnels are illuminated, the light is switched on via motion sensors. Well done! But some tunnels are also unlit (perhaps lights are still being installed?). So think about a lighting system if you want to cycle the route!

A beautiful cathedral with a good view from the castle above it, or rather its roof.

The SB Corona Tortosa is one of the Bikefriendly hotels with the best facilities in the network of accommodations for cyclists. It has a modern and well-kept space exclusively for storing guests' bicycles. Only cyclists have the key to this space and, in addition, each bike rack has its own individual lock. In the same area they have a bicycle repair and washing area with tools and, best of all, a washing machine and dryer available to cyclists. The accommodation itself offers a mountain bike rental service and organizes the Gran Fondo Terres de l'Ebre annually. https://bikefriendly.bike/hoteles/sb-corona-de-tortosa/

6月 23, 2022, Bot
Bot is a very charming village, located in the heart of Terra Alta, in Catalonia. The region's Voie Verte passes nearby but the terrain is not suitable for road cycling, unless you have gravel wheels.

6月 21, 2022, Mercat Municipal de Tortosa
Built in land reclaimed from the Ebro, the municipal market of Tortosa mixes several architectural styles. The buttresses are reminiscent of the Catalan Romanesque style, with Gothic touches and a taste of modernism. You can find fresh products and eat tapas there.

6月 21, 2022, Cathedral of Santa Maria de Tortosa
The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Tortosa is the seat of the diocese of the city of the same name in the province of Tarragona. Furthermore, it is thanks to the presence of the cathedral that Tortosa has gained its letters of nobility and has become a city in its own right. The building has a good mix of styles. Built on an old Romanesque colony from 1347, the style is mainly Gothic, although the façade shows a rather Baroque side, reinforced during its restoration. Located on the banks of the Ebro, the cathedral was left unfinished as higher towers would have blocked the cannons of the fortress on the hill.

The Cathedral of Santa María de Tortosa, is the seat of the Diocese of Tortosa in the province of Tarragona. The current building is Gothic and started in 1347, built on an earlier Romanesque building. The Cathedral was first consecrated in 1441 and construction phases continued up to the Baroque facade, begun in the 1620s and left unfinished in 1757. It is located on the banks of the River Ebro.
