In the 12th century it was the main border defense of Alto Minho, forming the northernmost guard post in Portugal on the section where the Minho River begins its border function and monitoring the crossing into Galicia (WIKIPEDIA). Today just a ruin. There is a small museum in the preserved keep.

One of the oldest bridges in the area dates back to Roman times. The three-arched masonry bridge is in its original state and was replaced by a newer bridge to allow crossing the Arnoia river.

Celanova's main square has bars and restaurants and is a great place to start any adventure. Like many towns in the region, its origin is pre-Roman and it is located on the trade route between Portugal and Ourense.
