The name of the town, part of the Arlanza region, comes from the Arabic word "maza" (a word for "maza") and "rais," meaning "meadow" or "field." In addition to being part of the Wool Route and the Camino del Cid's route to Exile, it is very common to play the dulzaina, a typical instrument of the area.
