7月 20, 2025, Orbaneja del Castillo
You might not want to go up to the village because you're too lazy, but once you get there, I assure you, you won't regret it. You can walk up the stairs or bike along the road from the village exit (heading upriver). It's clear that this is a tourist destination because it's home to most of the area's bars and restaurants.

We set out with the hope of ascending to the summit of Tresmares, where the Hijar-Ebro River begins and flows into the Mediterranean, the Pisuerga River (a tributary of the Duero River) flows into the Atlantic, and the Nansa River flows into the Cantabrian Sea. But a thick, damp fog covering the landscape forced us to give up and head back down the same way we came up. The road is partially covered by a bike lane and very little traffic. A steady climb of around 10%. Absolutely recommended. A few years ago, the Alto Campoo pass was the final stage of La Vuelta a España.

Officially, it's the source of the Ebro River, in Fontibre. However, according to what we were told at the tourist office, the waters of the spring pools come underground from the Hijar River, which rises in Alto Campoo. Specifically, in Tresmares, where the Hijar-Ebro begins, flowing into the Mediterranean; the Pisuerga (a tributary of the Duero) flows into the Atlantic; and the Nansa flows into the Cantabrian Sea.

La Matanela Pass, 1,005 m. Border between Burgos and Cantabria, Meseta and Pas. From Burgos, it's known as La Magdalena. I copied the altimetry from altimetrias.net, which can be trusted.

Very nice and comfortable route, there is a stretch of about 6km of narrow road and the vehicles do not respect it.

The Rupestre Church of La Virgen Del Carmen is located in the city of Cadalso in the municipality of Valderredible. History The Rupestrian Church of La Virgen Del Carmen is a rectangular temple with a single nave. This has a barrel vault roof. The head is reached through a semicircular triumphal arch; This head has an almost rectangular plan which is covered by an irregular vault molded to the shape of the rock and with an opening in the head. The access door is located on the south wall, it has a semicircular arch. On the outside of the temple we can see two small windows, one circular and the other rectangular. In the rectangular opening we notice that it is decorated with a line that forms an arch engraved in the rock. The lighting windows are of recent manufacture, since at the time of their construction these temples were designed to be in darkness. On the south wall and on the façade we see some tapping that gives a very vertical appearance. In these marks you can see the possible existence of a semi-rupestrian room with the possibility of the existence of an exterior room as a porch. As a result of the renovations, the temple shows some modern details such as the belfry and the altar table, among others. Above the church we can see tombs excavated in the rock, which are typical of the early medieval period. Those that have an anthropomorphic outline and a rectangular shape stand out. The Rupestrian Church of La Virgen Del Carmen was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1993. Information collected from: https://www.viajarporcantabria.com/?s=ermita+de+cadalso&x=0&y=0

The turquoise water pools of Orbaneja del Castillo are a dreamlike natural treasure. The water flows from the Cueva del Agua and crosses the beautiful medieval town in the middle with a waterfall of about 20 meters until it reaches the pools. A special and magical place in the heart of the Ebro canyon.

Fontibre is a small town in the Brotherhood of Suso, just 5 km from Reinosa. Beautiful town and place, where the source of the Ebro River is traditionally located. In fact, the name Fontibre refers to the source of the Ebro, as it derives from the Latin Fontes Iberis ("sources of the Ebro") and is already cited by Pliny the Elder when he mentioned it. It is located near the Roman city of Julióbriga. It doesn't matter when you visit, or at the time of year, because you will always appreciate and enjoy this little walk through the place.
