After the construction of the Kiel Canal, the new inland port on the canal replaced the "Old Port". However, it remained the home port for fishing boats for a long time. These later sought out other ports, including Büsum, Friedrichskoog and Cuxhaven. Since 1968, the image of the "Old Port" has been dominated exclusively by sailing and motor boats. On my previous ferry trips across the NOK (Brunsbüttel, Fischerhütte, Breiholz, Hochdonn) you can find a restaurant (beer garden) here where it is really worth taking a break. The self-service restaurant has a wide selection of food and drinks. Here you can make yourself comfortable and watch the ships go by. The ferry trip is free - like all other ferries on the NOK.

Unfortunately, the connection has been discontinued since 2021 and will unfortunately remain so due to a lack of economic viability.

No matter which direction you approach Meldorf from, you will be greeted from afar by the "Dithmarscher Cathedral". We are lucky🍀, the door is still open for us because they are still cleaning up for a baptism. St. John's Church, popularly known as the "Dithmarscher Cathedral", is one of the most important medieval church buildings on the west coast. It was built between 1250 and 1300 as a three-aisled basilica with a three-bay transept and a flat-roofed choir. The cathedral received its current exterior appearance after a major fire in 1866. The medieval shape of the interior has essentially been preserved. Before the fire, the church looked more massive, the tower was lower and squatter. Since the organ 🎹 is also being played, we stay in the church a little longer and listen to the music.
