In 1895, the young municipal architect Juan Agapito y Revilla drew up the plans for the projection of this central market. That same year, on September 4, the first stone was laid for works that still had to wait three more years before opening to the public. Its innovative architecture, inspired by the use of materials such as cast iron or glass, represented a true revolution for the physiognomy of a city like Palencia. This popular square, which has a total of seventy stalls, has a rectangular floor plan and is a perfect showcase to discover some of the most emblematic products of the area's gastronomy. On its exterior, several series of tiles stand out that represent the trades that historically met in the Plaza.

The work is located in the Plaza Mayor at the intersection of Calle Mayor with Calle Los Soldados and was made by the sculptor Luis Alonso in 2017 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the sculptor's death. The 2.5-meter-long sculpture, made of bronze, depicts the distinguished artist from Palencia working on his masterpiece and unequivocal symbol of Palencia, the Cristo del Otero.
