A beautifully decorated tunnel with lights.

Santa Cruz de Campezo, or Santikurutze Kanpezu, is a beautiful village in the Álava Mountains, situated beside the Ega River. With its historic stone center and the Church of the Assumption as a highlight, it combines history and nature in a peaceful setting. It offers all basic amenities and is a good starting point for exploring the nearby valleys and mountains.

A town with all the services

It is a three-aisled and four-aisled Gothic church with chapels between buttresses, a triforium, and a polygonal apse covered by ribbed vaults. At the base is a 14th-century portal with three archivolts, above which stands the Virgin and Child, adored by two angels. The south portal, the tomb of Cesare Borgia, features ornamentation characteristic of Mannerism and focuses the temple's greatest interest on its external appearance.

A wonderful resting place for pilgrims. Further ahead, you can see the Las Cañas reservoir, an important wetland for migratory birds.

The church was built in the 15th century and remodeled and completely decorated in the Baroque period. The tower façade was completed during this period. The main altar, which dates back to the first third of the 18th century, is noteworthy. There is an important collection of paintings hanging on the walls of the church and in the sacristy. Among them, the depiction of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, which is located in the presbytery, stands out.

On the way to Aras you pass under the ruins of the Franciscan convent of San Juan del Ramo, built by order of the Prince of Viana in the 15th century and of which only the imposing Gothic arch remains.
