The Valmayor reservoir is located northwest of the Community of Madrid, in Spain. It belongs to the Guadarrama basin, although it is built on the main tributary of this river, the Aulencia. It is the second in the province in terms of the amount of water stored (a capacity of 124.4 hm³), after the El Atazar reservoir (425.3 hm³), in the Lozoya basin. It is managed by the Canal de Isabel II. The Valmayor dam is located in the municipality of Valdemorillo. The reservoir, which runs along a length of twelve kilometers upstream, also floods the municipalities of El Escorial and Colmenarejo and occupies an area of 755 hectares.

This ancient Roman road, called Calzada borbónica, was the main route used to connect northern and southern Spain between the 1st and 18th centuries AD. An engineering feat for its time, this magnificent paved path nevertheless causes pain to the feet of today's trail runners.
