The Badum Tower is a watchtower belonging to the network of coastal watchtowers. It is located on the second highest cliff in the Valencian Community and offers spectacular views! Due to its geographical location and the fact that it is a coastal town, Peníscola has experienced numerous attacks from the sea throughout history. A complex surveillance system helped protect the town from attacks from the coast. The Badum Tower, a defensive structure of Arab origin, serves as an example of this. It was used to warn the inhabitants of the castle of the enemy's approach by means of smoke signals. It is situated on the main cliff edge of the Sierra de Irta, a 15-km-long mountain range running parallel to the coast, characterized by cliffs, coves, and sea reefs. It is therefore a strategic location for protection against the dangers emanating from the entire coastline. The Badum Tower is round, truncated cone-shaped, and eleven meters high.

The old town is located on an imposing rock that rises 64 m above the sea and is connected to the mainland by a strip of sand that used to be washed away by the waves during storms, temporarily turning the city into an island. The history of today's city goes back to around 1000 BC. The current old town was a castle at the time. The current castle was built by the Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307 on the ruins of a Moorish fortress. It was also the residence of the two popes Benedict XIII (Papa Luna) and Clement VIII.
