Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, the arts, strategy and just war. She was also linked to the protection of cities and roads. The original statue was found in Tossa de Mar during excavations at the ancient Villa Romana dels Ametllers, an archaeological site from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD, which shows the Roman presence in the area. The villa was a stately residence dedicated mainly to agriculture and wine production.

The sculpture that can be seen today on the beach of Tossa de Mar is a modern reproduction of the original found in the excavations. It was installed on the beach as a tribute to the historical Roman legacy of the town and as a symbol of protection for the inhabitants and visitors of Tossa de Mar.
