A simply stunning view of Auxerre and its magnificent cathedral, as well as the Vonne River with its many boats, and Auxerre with everything your heart desires. Plenty of places to rest and, of course, all sorts of restaurants.

Impressive remains from a time when river transport was essential. This gigantic work of art, designed by Henri IV and the Duke of Sully around 1597, in order to connect the Mediterranean to the Ocean and the Channel by bringing together the Loire and Seine rivers using a canal. The work, led by engineer Hugues Cosnier, lasted 38 years and required 6,000 workers to overcome the 24-metre drop in altitude of the hill.

The seven locks are such a monument that the city was officially named after them in 1978. Why all the effort to lower the canal to such a level? The answer is Henry IV's monumental project to connect the English Channel to the Mediterranean Sea. This lock is part of the Briare canal which connects the Loire and the Seine.

Before the 14th century Maligny had a castle surrounded by moats with a chapel. The village is structured around these buildings with the expansion of the city, shops, housing and infrastructure.

At the statue of Paul Bert, who gave it its name, you will find a small balcony from which you can enjoy the view of the old town in peace.
