A marvel of our beautiful Bourbonnais mountains

A small rural village, Châtelus was founded by the Gauls. Over the years, it grew into a substantial village, located on the important Roman road linking Cusset (Allier) to Marcigny (Loire). It houses a castle, later destroyed by the violent Wars of Religion. Today, the town maintains a museum dedicated to the 19th-century school, including numerous documents and furniture dating back to 1830. The museum is open on summer afternoons, from Thursday to Saturday.

Montgilbert Castle is a ruined medieval fortress dating back to the 13th century. Visitors can explore the remains of the two concentric walls, the towers, the chapel, and the seigneurial residence, and imagine the lives of the lords and soldiers who inhabited this strategic site. Château les Ruillers is a 15th century castle located on a hill overlooking the Sioule valley, rectangular in plan with four round towers at the corners. The castle is private property and not open to the public, but you can admire it from the outside. The Château les Ruillers is a fine example of medieval architecture in Auvergne.

You can admire the architecture of the castle which has retained some original windows and a Renaissance-style chapel with painted vaults. The castle is surrounded by fields and forests, providing a peaceful and natural setting for your hike.
