Vieil Armand, also known as Hartmannswillerkopf, is a striking mountain peak in the southern Vosges, near the Col Amic. This place is not only popular with cyclists because of the challenging climb and the panoramic view of the Rhine plain, but also an important historical monument. During the First World War, fierce fighting took place here between French and German troops, resulting in a static trench warfare. Today, the area is a national memorial with a crypt, military cemetery and well-preserved trenches. The climb to Vieil Armand via the Col Amic is not only sportingly rewarding, but also impressive because of the historical significance of the landscape.

Southern flair of soil conditions and vegetation

A very wonderful bare hill, which gives a clear view of the Rhine Valley. If you turn around, you can see the transmitters of the Grand Ballon. Both leave the grazing cattle that share this pretty spot with the hiker cold

The visit is worthwhile. The museum is very good and the tomb site is well maintained. The hike through the position system also starts from here. Good shoes required, no flip flops! Clear recommendation to start from here

If you have taken a seat on the bench, you should be able to see the (German) Belchen directly ahead. A view up to the Grand Ballon (Großer Belchen) is also possible from here.

More than 100 years ago a war raged here and there was so much suffering that a memorial was built here, which should give many a leader something to think about today.
