The bridges used to be wooden and covered, hence the name. They were long ago replaced by new ones made of stone and without roofs. The name has stuck. It refers to the bridges and the towers (three of the four are still standing), which together once formed a defensive structure.

Place du Château (in standard German and in Alsatian dialect Schlossplatz) is located in the Grande Île of Strasbourg. Built in 1215, it changed its name several times.
