The Ecluse des Fontinettes is a lock and not a lift (!) in the north of France, between the river Aa in Arques and the Canal d’Aire in Aire-sur-la-Lys. The canal is part of the Canal Dunkerque-Escaut and is approximately 18 kilometers long. The canal was built in 1760 to connect the river Lys with the Aa, giving Lille and other inland cities a French route to the sea. The canal has a maximum height of 19 meters and a minimum height of 3 meters. The canal has a number of historical features, including three locks from the eighteenth century and a double lock from 1887 called the ascenseur des Fontinettes.
