It's better to go up via Ceyssat and come back down via Orcines. The climb still hurts but there's less traffic and the descent is worth it 😉

As you walk along the Gouris path, you will have a breathtaking view of the Puy de Dôme, one of the most iconic volcanoes in the Auvergne region. At over 1,400 metres, the Puy de Dôme dominates the horizon with its characteristic rounded shape. As you pass it, you are sometimes rewarded with a ring of mist around its summit on cold mornings, which creates a magical experience.

If you're looking for a cycling tour that combines nature, culture and history, you could visit Puy de Clermont, a volcanic peak that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Puy de Clermont is part of the Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes 80 volcanoes of different shapes and sizes. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the Auvergne region.

Error or ignorance: there is no panoramic cable car to reach the summit of the Puy de Dôme. There is only a panoramic cogwheel train that leaves from the bottom of the volcano. The journey offers the possibility of seeing superb points of view. Other information: the road bordering the train track is a service road. It is prohibited for cars and bicycles. From time to time, thanks to sporting events, it is exceptionally open to cyclists. This road will be taken in July 2023 by the riders of the Tour de France in the final of one of the stages run in Auvergne.
