The stone circus Cirque Jules Verne is one of the seven stone circuses that France still has. It was initially a wooden circus built in 1875. In 1886, the city of Amiens made the decision to replace it with a stone circus. Construction started in 1887. Émile Ricquier, a student of Gustave Eiffel, led the works, and the circus was solemnly opened in June 1889. The name of the author Jules Verne, who was a councilor of Amiens at this time, was given to the circus. He occupied this seat for sixteen years (from 1888 to 1906) as a member of the Republican party, and was committed to education and theater.[1] Since then, many circus companies have performed here, including the Circus Barnum and Bailey and the Circus Annie Fratellini. But not only circus companies have used the complex, singers such as Ray Charles, Johnny Hallyday, Claude François and many other artists have also performed here. The circus also served as a backdrop for several films by well-known directors such as Federico Fellini and Nico Papatakis. The circus was closed for two years for extensive renovations and reopened in November 2003. Particular attention was paid to the dome to restore it to its original appearance. It was a first: in 1867, France's first museum outside of Paris opened in a magnificent palace in Amiens.

#09 - Jules Verne goes to the museum The Musée de Picardie is an innovation for the 19th century. Constructed between 1855 and 1867, the building was the first in France specifically designed as a museum of fine arts and archaeology. Throughout my life in Amiens I have been interested in the museum. Immediately after moving to Amiens, I got involved in the social and cultural life of my adopted country. Long before I was elected to the city council in 1888, I was active in local government. In this way, in 1886, I was appointed to the Administrative Committee of the Musée de Picardie. In February 1888, I attended the reception of the large painting Pro Patria Ludus (Games for the Fatherland) painted by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes for the museum's porch. I invited my friend Philippe Gille, literary columnist for Figaro and author of opera librettos. The photo that immortalizes this moment shows Frédéric Petit, the incumbent Republican mayor, and me, who had put himself forward as a candidate on his list, side by side. As a council member, I remain interested in the museum and its collections. As various offices in the town hall are decorated with paintings, I suggest bringing these works to the museum where they can be made accessible to a wider audience.” Source: https://www.amiens.fr/Grands-projets/Aronnax/Etapes/etape-9/Le-Musee-de-Picardie-allemand

#07 - The Jules Verne Circus “As a member of Amiens City Council for about a year, I have the honor of delivering the opening speech for the new circus on June 23, 1889. To commemorate this event, a major concert will be held by the Amiens Brass Band and other music groups in the city.” According to the press, the writer captivated the 3,000 spectators. His twenty-minute speech is repeatedly interrupted by applause. He decided to offer the public a small journey, imaginatively guiding them around, in and over this new circus: with its monumental portico, the machines in the basement of the annex, from above by flying to the dome, then a descent to the boxes, the stables, the stage and the grandstands. "It is sometimes claimed that I initiated this project, but that is not true. In Amiens, thanks to the initiative of the mayor Frédéric Petit and the city council, a permanent circus is being built, designed by the architect Emile Ricquier. Since 1889, not only circus performances have taken place in this circus, but also plays, concerts and meetings.” Source: https://www.amiens.fr/Grands-projets/Aronnax/Etapes/etape-7/Le-Cirque-Jules-Verne-allemand

#01 - The Nautilus and the Kraken Octopus My name is Pierre Aronnax and I have lived an extraordinary story. After being shipwrecked, I was taken aboard a submarine called the Nautilus. The captain, who introduced himself as Nemo (which means nobody in Latin), introduced me to the mysteries of the underwater world, its wonders and monsters. One of them is particularly impressive. Do you know the legend of the Kraken, the giant octopus that can drag a ship in its tentacles? In any case, the Nautilus almost fell victim to him. This encounter left the greatest impression on me! So you understand how proud I am that my name was chosen for this route in Amiens! Because you too will make encounters. I guarantee you that they will not be dangerous. A note of clarification: I am a fictional character, as you may have guessed. I turn up in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and the man I owe my existence to is Jules Verne. I am a special character because the illustrators of this novel portray me with the features of Jules Verne... The Musée de Picardie is a marvel of eclecticism. Ranging from magnificent prehistoric collections to sculptures by Josesph Stanislas Lecorné. Created in 1867, this makes it one of the first French museums. It will satisfy all curiosities.
