a lock of a special kind - and - from now on we go along the Saone

The Eurovelo 6 runs along the towpath until Labergement. Then through villages until Dole. This first stretch of canal is very romantic and you can often see houseboats on the canal or in the locks.

Pretty little town with shops, bars and restaurants. The church is particularly beautiful with its twisted bell tower.

This is where the Rhine-Rhone canal flows into the Saône river. Technically, the canal continues through the river, which is also deepened in the upper reaches and straightened in some places with canal passages.

Flat asphalt road along the canal; there is shade from trees along some parts if you want to have a picnic.

This spot marks the canal's mouth at the Saône River. The Rhine-Rhône Canal had a turbulent history, with construction interrupted by the French Revolution and finally extending from 1784 to 1832. The lock at the canal's mouth has been renovated. In 2009, a lock keeper's cabin was installed, perched six meters high, to control the arrival of boats.

Labeled “Imperial City”, Auxonne is an old stronghold which has an important historical heritage, notably its church, its castle, its arsenal. Stroll through the streets of the city and take advantage of the many shops, bars and restaurants to take a break.

The city has a mighty (and historic) fortress, a beautiful market square and a multitude of ancient streets.
