The statue is accessible from the inside. Through the small peepholes, which are accessed via a fixed ladder, you have a fantastic view.

A very pleasant little visit, with a view of Le Puy-en-Velay and its surroundings. The castle is open almost every day; the ticket office is located near the church at the bottom of the castle. To enter the castle, you must insert a token, which is given at the ticket office.

High above the town and the surrounding area of Le Puy-en-Velay, in a very prominent position, stands the Virgin Mary - who is venerated here under the title "Notre Dame de France" - with the baby Jesus in her arms. The builders of the statue certainly wanted to ask for Mary's blessing for the town and the country.

From up there you have a wonderful view of the city.

A major religious building in Puy-en-Velay, Notre-Dame Cathedral offers at 7 a.m., every day from April 1 to October 31 and at 7:30 a.m., Monday to Friday, from November 1 to March 31, the blessing of pilgrims. Whether you are walking towards Compostela or not, this stop is a must in the city.

This church is located on the first stage of the Chemin de Saint-Jacques, just past Le Puy-en-Velay, on the way to Saint-Privat-d'Allier. The name of Saint Christopher, to whom the church is dedicated, translates as "Christ-bearer." According to legend, he was a giant man who carried people across a river. One day, a small child called to him, and he carried it on his shoulders to the other side. Amazingly, the child grew heavier and heavier, and he said he felt as if the weight of the whole world rested on his shoulders. Then the child revealed himself to him as Jesus Christ, Savior and Redeemer of the world.

The town of Le Puy-en-Velay with its cathedral and the "Black Madonna" worshiped there for many centuries is one of the major starting points in France for the Way of St. James. This leads the pilgrim from here over the southern foothills of the Massif Central to the Pyrenees , from there (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port) then across to Spain and on to Santiago de Compostela, the tomb of the Apostle James the Greater.
