La Tour d'Auvergne was once an impregnable fortress belonging to the house of La Tour d'Auvergne and whose castle was built on an ancient Roman tower. The castle has since given way to a peaceful village built on an ancient basalt flow, whose organs can be seen near the church. Nice and quiet track. Lots of grass. Well cyclable with a gravelbike. Also there is MTB route following this path. I don't think this path is used a lot.

The track changes from brand new tarmac to gravel to dirt to grass and finally gravel again (from west to east). Beautiful view at Massif du Sancy

La Tour-d'Auvergne is a very old village which finds its foundations on a basalt peak, the vestige of a volcanic flow from the great volcano that was the Sancy massif. In the town you can admire the basalt columns to the left of the church. These are geological formations that result from the solidification of a basaltic flow shortly after its emission, which attests to the proximity of the volcanic crater.

Extremely calm place at the confluence of the Dordogne and one of its tributaries, at the most upstream point of the reservoir of the Bort-les-Orgues dam. Once at the bottom, you have to go back up and the coast towards Confolent-Port-Dieu offers a nice drop in altitude and fairly high percentages for lovers of short and dry climbs.
