Not as good a viewpoint as the plunging view, accessible in the continuity of the more sporty path on the other side of the watercourse, which can be caught up by crossing the bridge a little lower down.

The Montgilbert fort is located at an altitude of 1,630 meters and dates from the 1880s. It then allowed surveillance of the Arc valley, the Allez valley and the Col du Cucheron. It is no longer possible to visit it, but you can get a good overview of it by approaching the entrance.

The rocky, moonscape summit of Le Grand Mont, with its distinctive summit cross, can be seen for many miles around. The out-and-back ascent from the village of Arêches is a big but thoroughly enjoyable day out, with steep, grassy mountainsides, Alpine pastures, marmots, hidden lakes and engagingly technical but not dangerous terrain. A wooden cross marks the summit at 2,686 metres (8,812 ft) and a rocky pedestal affords glorious views over the Beaufortain range and further afield towards Mount Blanc.

Refuge les Arolles stands in an elevated position with views down into the valley and up towards La Légette du Grand Mont. Open in July and August serving drinks, snacks and meals, you can also stay here if you book in advance. The Piapolay chairlift links the village of Le Planay to a platform just below the refuge. If you take this rather than running, you'll save 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) of distance and 675 metres (2,215 ft) of ascent.
