The abbey church of Ste-Quitterie contains the relics of Saint Quiteria. According to tradition, she was a Gothic princess. She was beheaded because she did not want to deviate from her Christian faith. That is the plausible part of the legend. The Middle Ages was the time of storytellers. Stories were told and often embellished when retold. So after her beheading, Saint Quiteria is said to have carried her own head to the place where the crypt is today.
