In place of an old gate in the 12th-century city wall, the architect Jean-Philippe Maret had this monument built between 1786 and 1788 in homage to the Prince of Condé, governor of Burgundy. The building was then named Porte Condé. The monument was connected by walls to the ramparts that still existed, and its gate was closed by a gate, traces of which can still be seen. During the Revolution in 1791, the gate was named the Arc de la Liberté; in the 19th century, it became Porte Guillaume, in reference to Guillaume de Volpiano, abbot of the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne.

Gate of the old city located on a Place Darcy renovated thanks to the arrival of the Tramway. Emblematic cinema 'Le Darcy' as well as the prestigious hotel la Cloche and other buildings in the Haussmann style.

The name Porte Guillaume is a tribute to Guillaume de Volpiano, abbot of the Abbey of Saint Bénigne, who participated in the construction of the abbey in the 11th century, which was later converted into a cathedral and is located not far away.

With its balustrade terraces punctuated by two majestic staircases framing the water surface, the Jardin Darcy has an Italian feel. This area, which is very popular with Dijon residents and the many tourists passing through, borders the Hôtel de la Cloche and Place Darcy and is just a few minutes' walk from the train station. At the entrance, you will find yourself face to face with the "Pompon Bear", as Dijon residents call it. It is a copy of the white bear, the famous work of the Burgundian sculptor François Pompon (the original is in the Musée d'Orsay), made by the artist Henry Martinet in 1937 as a tribute to Pompon. Good to know: Under the hill of the garden lies the Darcy reservoir. Narrow staircases lead to a circular vaulted cellar lined with arcades. The reservoir, a majestic cylinder with a diameter of 28 m and a capacity of 2,300 m3, owes its name to Henry Darcy, a Dijon engineer in the 19th century. His plan at the time was to build a 12 km long underground aqueduct from the Val Suzon to Dijon. In 1840, after a three-hour journey, 7,000 litres of water arrived at the Darcy reservoir every minute, making Dijon the second best supplied city in Europe with drinking water after Rome. Today, the reservoir stores water intended for watering the lawns of the tramway. A symbol of the virtuous environmental policy pursued by the city and Dijon Métropole. (https://www.dijon.fr/)

This triumphal gate, sometimes called the "Triumphal Arch of Dijon", was built in the 18th century. However, its origins are much older, as at that time the city was surrounded by a rampart on which the monument was built. From these remains, the current city gate was rebuilt in the 18th century. It was named Porte Guillaume after William of Volpiano, abbot of the Abbey of Saint Bénigne. In the 11th century, he contributed to the construction of the latter, which was later converted into a cathedral and is located nearby. The 'Rue Verrerie' is a pedestrian street and one of the most picturesque shopping streets in the historic center of Dijon. It is mostly occupied by antique dealers - in the past several glass craftsmen had their offices there. The street is entirely paved and there are very well preserved or restored half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries.
