This magnificent church in Briare was dedicated to the patronage of "Saint-ETIENNE". He was one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem community and, according to the biblical accounts in the "New Testament", was also the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church commemorates his death on the second day of Christmas, December 26th. The seven locks are such a monument that the city was officially named after them in 1978. Why all the effort to lower the canal to such a level? The answer is Henry IV's monumental project to connect the English Channel to the Mediterranean Sea. This lock is part of the Briare canal which connects the Loire and the Seine.
