5月 4, 2025, St. Secundus Church, Hennstedt
History of the church on the Hennstedter Hang! It has stood there for 800 years and is dedicated to Saint Secundus, a remarkable name for a church. Secundus was a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and died as a martyr. The church, built of sturdy fieldstone, was probably completed in 1280 during the Romanesque period. Over time, it was expanded to the east and west and is located on a historic site where storm surges from the North Sea and Eider River once reached land.

Tellingstedt was known as a pottery town for over 300 years As a central location, Tellingstedt has always been a trading center in northern Dithmarschen. Due to the rich deposits of clay, the art of pottery played an important role. Numerous potters practiced their craft here and supplied the entire rural area of the west coast with high-quality pottery. Two potteries in Tellingstedt and Hövede continue this old tradition to this day. In 1999, more than 300 years of pottery art in Tellingstedt came to an end. In 1680, the crofter Hans Sehmer was mentioned as the first potter. Most potters were Hufner or Kätner, which means they kept some farming to have a sideline. Easily degradable clay deposits of good quality were the basis for the production of pottery for everyday use. However, selling the pottery often required long, arduous journeys. Around 1850 - at that time there were 17 potteries - the decline of the farmer's pottery began. Improved traffic conditions, competition from foreign goods, mass production of tin dishes and industrialization (dairies) and the associated reduction in the range of products (milking parlors) caused the pottery factories to shrink to three by 1900. In 1920, only Heinrich Reimers' business in Westerborstelstraße was still available. The pottery tradition in Tellingstedt could be preserved by switching to art pottery and with financial support. The motifs helped Tellingstedt ceramics to become well known. It was so specific that one could speak of a "Tellingstedt style". The bird plate (wedding plate) from 1747 was produced in various variants until the end. Heinrich Reimers died in 1938; He was followed for a few years by Otto Thomsen, in 1944 by the Deventer couple and in November 1949 by Marion and Rudolf Bönsch. They led the company to new heights. It was only in 1999 that her daughter closed the well-known pottery shop. Today, two former employees still make pottery in their private homes and try to keep up the long tradition in Tellingstedt. The first pottery was founded in Tellingstedt 300 years ago. In 1850 there were already 17 companies here. The decorations of the "Tellingstedter style" became well known. Until 1999, this style was preserved in the last pottery, until the craft died out here.
