From the sea, it's a little over an hour's drive with lots of twists and turns, but it's doable. Start early so you can arrive before noon if possible. It's impressive to see the car-free village of La Nouvelle on the other side (in the middle), which we hiked to from the other side of the valley and from there we looked here and at the bare rock face to the right. The view is impressive overall, but also fascinating when the clouds rise up over the rock face at midday, but then you no longer have a view 😉

You have to be there as early as possible because from 11 a.m. the sky takes over and therefore no more view. Also, a fairly complex hike.

Breathtaking view of the Mafate cirque but the stone path is not very pleasant. The return via the Glacière is easier but the view is much less spectacular.

Piton des Neiges is a dormant volcano located in the center of Reunion Island. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, it culminates at 3,070 meters above sea level. This volcano, inactive for about 12,000 years, is responsible for the creation of two thirds of the island. Its name is misleading since snowfalls are rare there, and eternal snow non-existent. However, it is cold there and, therefore, hikers who venture there must be well equipped.

The Dimitile is a summit which dominates the cirque of Cilaos at an altitude of 1,850 metres. A furnished belvedere as well as an orientation table which details the impressive panorama which is there.

Absolutely unique experience! I have never seen a more beautiful starry sky. In the morning we could see the whole island from above, an incredible feeling!

La Roche Écrite culminates at 2,276 meters above sea level. This summit marks the meeting point between the circuses of Mafate and Salazie which meet at its feet. You have to get there early enough to be able to observe the incredible panorama it offers. Indeed, the clouds quickly gain this altitude.
