Wikipedia The Twelve Apostles Stone (French: Pierre des douze Apôtres; also Breitenstein, Latin: Petra lata) is a prehistoric menhir on the connecting road between Meisenthal, Mouterhouse (both in the Moselle department) and Wingen-sur-Moder (Bas-Rhin department) in the Northern Vosges Nature Park (Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord). Since the Middle Ages it has formed a border marker between Alsace and Lorraine. The monolith, carved from a single block of red sandstone, is about four meters high. Its history is unclear. It is believed that it is a cult stone from the Celtic ("druidic") period. In 1787 the upper part was designed as a crucifixion group (the crucified Christ with two Marys). A simple relief with the twelve apostles was carved out below.

The Graufthal troglodyte caves consist of a series of cave-like structures carved into sandstone cliffs. They were originally created in the 18th century by local villagers who sought refuge in the natural rock formations.

It is hard to imagine that there was an important Benedictine abbey in this small town. Sigebaud, Bishop of Metz, had it built in 723. Her patron saint was St. Gangolph. In 1160 Hildegard von Bingen stayed in Graufthal. It was destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525 and then the stones were used to build the church and some houses.

The Maison des Rochers can be visited for €3 per entry. It actually forms a set of three so-called semi-troglodyte dwellings. They remained inhabited until 1958 but today are only house museums restored and fitted out with period furniture. The settings found in these buildings echo the legends of the region.
