A beautiful church in the center of Saintes-de-la-Mer. For €4, you can climb up to the church roof and enjoy the magnificent view. The church is clearly visible from afar.

The pertuis de la Fourcade, located on the sea wall at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, is a strategic structure. For the Camargue Islands, it is an important tool for draining floodwaters into the Rhône and combating flooding by the sea. It is also the main site for biological exchange between all the ponds in the Vaccarès system and the Mediterranean Sea and for the inflow and outflow of migratory fish.

Lost at the end of the world, just a few steps from home! No motor vehicles for more than 20 km, almost no one this morning of November 3. The colors, the birds, the plants, these reflections on the water, this light. It's simply magical! A serenity that is more than worth the detour.

Climbing the roof costs 4 euros per person. Admission is until 1 p.m. Then there is a lunch break. It opens again from 2 p.m. It is definitely worth it. You have a beautiful panoramic view of Saintes-Maria-de-la-mer, the Mediterranean and the Carmarque.

The Roman Catholic church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer was built in the 12th century. The church has been a listed monument since 1840. At the end of May each year, members of the Roma, Manouches, Sinti and Yenish people meet to pay homage to their patron saint, Black Sara. The small town becomes a huge caravan camp. The pilgrims prepare the religious event and organize the program for a week. It is also the festival of reunion, and the majority of the children are baptized in the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer.

The tour of the pond offers a natural and wild panorama with diverse fauna. Of course we are in the Camargue, so we come across numerous farms of more or less wild animals, horses and bulls, but also foxes, coypus... We are in marshes, the ornithological species are numerous, pink flamingos, storks, egrets for cite only the most emblematic ones. In short, landscape and wildlife offer an absolutely unique spectacle of nature

There must have been a church ⛪ here as early as the 6th century because it was mentioned in the will of St. Cesarius, Archbishop of Arles. The first fortified church was built in the 9th century, and the Roman Catholic church in its current state was completed in the 12th century. Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer was built as a priory church that belonged to Montmajour Abbey. The original church made of quarry stone only had a single-nave nave with three bays. In the 14th century, a fortification wall with battlements and pitches was built, i.e. a fortified church was built. Since the place became increasingly important as a place of pilgrimage to visit the crypt with the Black Sara, the nave was extended by two bays to the west in the second half of the 15th century. The church ⛪ has been a protected architectural monument (Monument historique) since 1840.
