G.H. Mumm is one of the world's largest champagne houses. It was founded in 1827 by brothers Jacobus, Gottlieb, and Phillip Mumm, heirs to an ancient German family and winemakers in the Rhine Valley. The distinctive hallmark that has marked the brand's success is the Cordon Rouge (red cord), borrowed from the high honor associated with the French Legion of Honor. The company has endured many ups and downs throughout its history, including wartime confiscation by the French state. More recently, the house has changed hands several times; since 2005, it has been part of the Pernod Ricard brand portfolio.
