Coal mining and iron smelting were once practiced in the Giers River valley. Therefore, a canal was built between Givors and Rive de Giers in the 18th century. With the expansion of the railway and after several floods, the canal lost its importance and fell into disrepair. During the construction of the motorway, the canal was almost completely filled in. Lock 39, with its lock tunnel, was built as a memorial in Lorette near Rive de Giers. ```
