UNESCO World Heritage, what more can be said except that the Doubs Valley and the splendid ruins of old medieval castles from the top of wild cliffs have watched over the valley for centuries?

I have cycled this cycle path several times (different years) and each time I have passed these horrible looking factory ruins on the opposite bank - a very poor reception from Besançon - a real shame.

The Porte Rivotte is a 16th century military structure in the Rivotte sector, near the historic centre of Besançon. It is one of the last two remaining city gates of Besançon, along with the Porte taillée (the Porte Noire is not a gate but a triumphal arch).

This Gallo-Roman triumphal arch was built around 175 AD in honor of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius after the victory over the Parthians in 166 and is characterized by a very rich sculpture. The columns are decorated with plant motifs, legendary scenes (mythology) and battle scenes.

Beautiful to see how the Citadel of Bresançon (VAUBAN, UNESCO World Heritage Site) dominates its surroundings. If you continue towards Besançon you can soon cycle through a tunnel under the citadel. The Voie Verte you are on is part of the EuroVélo 6 that connects the Atlantic Ocean in France with the Black Sea in Romania.
