The Loue in Mouthier-Haute-Pierre is distinguished by its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Here you will find a calming section of the river framed by spectacular cliffs, perfect for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.

The Cascade de Syratu is an impressive waterfall that cascades over the rocky cliffs of the Baume above Mouthier-Haute-Pierre in the Doubs department. With a total height difference of 230 metres, it is the largest waterfall in the department. The waterfall consists of several levels: The upper part begins with an almost vertical drop of 50 metres from the edge of the plateau at a height of 600 metres. This is followed by a second vertical drop of 32 metres, which brings the water to the level of the road. The lower part of the waterfall extends over a wooded slope and ends at the Loue river, where there are several waterfalls covered with tufa. To get a general view of the waterfall, you should climb up the left bank after crossing the old bridge over the Loue. The middle part of the waterfall is visible from the road that goes up to the gorges. The lower part, with its wild tuff massifs, can be reached on foot via paths that start on either side of the small bridge over the Syratu stream.

From the road you can admire the middle part of the Syratu waterfall, which is 32 meters high. It was channeled to pass under the road. With the upper and lower parts, the waterfall has a total height of 230 meters, from the edge of the rock plateau above you to the Loue. The waterfall marks the entry into the Gorges de Nouailles where the Loue flows.

Very beautiful view. The descent is not a problem in dry weather if you have suitable shoes.

This cave is superb. It has been unblocked several times and archaeological traces trace the human presence from the Neolithic to the present day. Bring a headlamp to explore this cave and its many rooms in more depth, but first find out about periods of calm and lethargy for the bats (you are in their home there)

This cavern is impressive, the immense cliff seems to crush this “small” opening in the wall, from which clear waters gush. The lights and the tranquility of the place are remarkable. Consider bringing a headlamp to explore the caves a little more. Climbing enthusiasts will notice some equipped routes with quite an overhang.

Nice viewpoint. There is a sign warning you about the descent directly towards the Loue source, but in dry weather it is, in my opinion, easily accessible for experienced hikers.

This source is one of the most curious in the Loue valley. Emanating from a deep cave (and accessible on foot) the waterfall expels its waters with a rather impressive power. Also, lovers of geological curiosities will notice the walls and vaults of limestone tuff (porous rock common in the region).
