The Abbey of Notre-Dame and Saint-Jean-Baptiste of Saint-Jean-aux-Bois is located in the heart of the Compiègne forest, in the village of Saint-Jean-aux-Bois, in the Oise. It was founded in 1152 as an abbey of Benedictine nuns by Queen Adelaide of Savoy (widow of Louis VI). In 1220, the abbey was given a new Gothic-style church. Possible to avoid the climb (part of the cycle path is rough due to the many roots) between Route du Bois de Damart and Chemin de la Becassière Vivier by taking the Gravel path on the right (it is a false flat uphill section on hard earth and large gravel, easy to negotiate)
