The two "guardians" of the Lac du Guery belong to the volcanic massif of the Aiguillier, whose activity period was between 2.2 and 1.8 million years ago. Lake Guéry is a mountain lake of volcanic origin located in the Dore mountains, in the heart of the Massif Central. It is the highest of the Auvergne lakes.
