Located in the Municipality of Saint-Thurial, 22 kilometers southwest of Rennes, the Chèze dam is a class A dam built between 1973 and 1975 by the City of Rennes, to secure the drinking water supply of the Rennes basin. (www.eaudubassinrennais-collectivite.fr)

Historic site of Les Forges on the edge of the Etang des Forges

At the southern tip of the department, 40 km from Rennes, the Etang de la Forge stretches along the course of the Semnon, a tributary of the Vilaine. Bordered by rocky outcrops, the body of water is an area for fishing and nautical activities on its western part. This is an ornithological reserve in the east which welcomes hundreds of birds each year during migration. A place for walks, leisure and naturalist observation, the Etang de la Forge lends itself to all nature desires.

On the Etang des Forges, the forges of Paimpont are a remarkable industrial site. In 1656, the forges were set up in the heart of the forest of Paimpont. They then have three riches: iron, water and wood. The activity lasted until the 20th century when, overtaken by foreign competition, the site closed. Today, the forges are open to the public and their mission is to safeguard this great industrial heritage.
