Rivers and canals crisscross the country, the latter in particular being a crucial part of the transport infrastructure in earlier times. Later, first rail, and later again trucks, took over the task of transporting goods. In the competition between different modes of transport, they were faster and cheaper than barges – and thus more efficient. When building the artificial waterways, however, it had to be taken into account that differences in elevation always had to be overcome, and so locks are often lined up along the canals – at varying intervals, depending on the local situation. Only with their help was shipping possible.

It's just a great landscape - there's just so much to discover! The trip along the canal - a few detours here and there - we'll have to take a lot more time next time!

a great city - after driving many kilometers past empty cities, there is something going on here in Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire in the evenings! No deserted streets, just events and people going out! We felt really comfortable!

Gateway to Burgundy as you go up the course of the Loire, Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire is a charming Loire town. Its shopping town center is lively with its stores, restaurants and accommodation. Every Wednesday and Sunday the largest market in the department is held there. Also, the railway station is served daily by the Paris-Nevers axis.

In Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, the Sancerrois cyclorail is an essential activity. On the old rails of a railway line, you take one of the oldest metal bridges in France for a round trip to Saint-Satur (about thirteen kilometers).
