The Saar coal mine canal owes its name to its origins. It was created to transport coal from the Saarbrücken deposit. It joins the Marne-Rhine canal at Gondrexange. These two canals are now bordered by the EuroVelo 5 cycle path.

Sarralbe (German Saaralben, Lorraine Alwe or Saaralwe) is a commune in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region in France (until 2015 Lorraine). The place belongs to the arrondissement of Sarreguemines and is the capital of the canton of Sarralbe. Sarralbe has 4555 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on 27.29 km² and is the third largest municipality in the arrondissement after Saargemünd and Bitsch.

The route is scenically beautiful, but riding the bike path with a racing bike is an impertinence. The asphalt is bad and has extreme bumps from tree roots. There is also a speed limit of 20 km/h on the French side.
